The United Nations Economic and Social Council, commonly known as ECOSOC, is one of the principal bodies responsible for coordinating international work on economic, social and sustainable development issues. Its annual Youth Forum provides young people with a formal platform to present recommendations, exchange solutions and engage with governments, United Nations agencies and civil society organizations.

The 2023 ECOSOC Youth Forum was held from 25 to 27 April at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and online. It was convened by the President of ECOSOC and co-organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth.

The forum focused on accelerating recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its programme also reviewed progress related to clean water, clean energy, industry and innovation, sustainable cities and international partnerships.

As part of the forum, the SDG Media Zone hosted the interview “Young Leaders Accelerating Positive Change for COVID-19 Recovery and SDG Implementation” on 25 April. The SDG Media Zone is a United Nations communication platform where policymakers, specialists, campaigners and young leaders discuss practical approaches to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The interview was moderated by Conor Lennon, a producer with UN News. Karen Wang participated alongside Varaidzo “Vee” Kativhu, an education advocate and social entrepreneur, and Jamal Hill, a Paralympic swimmer and founder of a water-safety organization.
